Africa is not one culture, one language or one history. KumbulaAfrica explores the continent through specific people, places, knowledge and everyday life.
Because the details matter.
Botswana
Our public cultural archive begins somewhere we can speak from with intimacy and specificity. Through stories, research and contributions from people who know the culture from within, we explore language, food, places, history, indigenous knowledge, poetry, proverbs, childhood, agriculture, music, people, objects, traditions and contemporary life.
And the countless small things that make a place feel like home.
Our standard
- Specific before generic.
- Curious before authoritative.
- Respect before aesthetic.
Six ways into the archive.
Each strand is being built with contributors who know the material from the inside. Sections open as the work is ready.
Food, Land & Memory
Food carries more than flavour. It carries climate, movement, survival, trade, family, ceremony and memory.
We explore traditional ingredients, indigenous crops, recipes, farming knowledge, cattle, food systems and what the meals we inherited reveal about how people lived.
Language & Meaning
Some ideas cannot survive translation intact.
We explore words, names, proverbs, idioms, poetry and expressions that reveal how different African communities understand life.
People Worth Knowing
Not every important person appears in history books. KumbulaAfrica documents people solving real problems, building enterprises, preserving knowledge, creating, leading, teaching and growing.
Work that deserves to be remembered.
Childhood, Games & Play
Songs, riddles, street games, hand games, stories and rules everybody seemed to know without anyone writing them down.
We are exploring how play can become one of the most joyful ways to keep culture moving across generations.
Objects & Material Culture
The things people make and use tell stories. Clothing, tools, kitchen objects, baskets, furniture, adornment, ceremonial objects, printed material and everyday design.
We explore not simply how they look, but what they meant and why they existed.
Place & Movement
Villages, cities, borders, cattle posts, roads, rivers, markets, migration routes and neighbourhoods.
Place shapes memory, and movement changes it.
KumbulaAfrica is African in ambition, but we do not pretend to know every Africa.
As the platform grows, stories from other countries and communities will be developed with people who know those places from the inside: Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Lesotho, Eswatini and Mozambique, and eventually far beyond Southern Africa.
Your family may know something the archive does not.
Official history can only hold so much. Families hold the rest.
If you know a story, recipe, photograph, proverb, person, tradition, word, game, object or piece of knowledge that deserves to be remembered, we would like to hear about it.
Not because every contribution will become a published story, but because some things deserve the chance to be documented before they disappear.
